Dutch Schippertje Lamp electric converted for sale in Tremonton, UT
The old Dutch Schippertje style originated in Holland in the mid 19th century. This lamp is 20 in wide x 45 in long. The style came from the province of Friesland for the people who lived on house boats and sailing ships. Schipper refers to the captain, like skipper. The Schippertje folk art style was used in the hanging and table oil lamps, as well as small wall clocks. Ceilings of the boats were not tall enough for the traditional clocks, and the hanging lamps were made special to be adjustable height by use of a counter balance weight and use of chains. The lamps were cast of iron with oil reservoirs of ceramic or milk glass, and had burners of brass. The folk art designs in the iron work were designed in various themes including nature, flowers, people, and animals. Typical of the small Schippertje clock is the open tail and a steering wheel in the back, and the pendulum is an anchor.
